Guide to Wisconsin Psychology Degree Programs

Do you want to explore the human mind and help people at the same time? Psychology is a way to do that and Wisconsin may be the place to practice. While famous for the agricultural products that come out of the state, Wisconsin also takes pride in having one of the lowest costs of living in the country. Friendly and warm describe those that have lived in the state all their lives. With outdoor activities year round, this state boasts of both vigorous cities and rural hamlets.  These pockets all provide employment opportunities for those with a psychology degree.

The metropolis of Milwaukee edges Lake Michigan and provides easy access to the Chicago area. Moving inland, the capital of Madison hosts an excellent university as well as state government. Smaller cities such as Appleton and Green Bay help round out this state’s diversity. The state has an excellent university system and a growing biotechnology industry. All of this opens up opportunities for psychology majors to find a job and enjoy this state’s attractions.

Wisconsin Psychology Job Outlook and Salary

In the next few years, the number of psychology jobs in Wisconsin is expected to grow by about ten percent. That information comes from the Wisconsin Workforce Information, Bureau of Labor Statistics. Clinical, counseling and school psychologists stand to gain the most. Other jobs will come available in private industry. With the vibrant university system, teaching and research opportunities can be found as well.

Payscale places the median salary for a clinical psychologist at around $60,000 in Wisconsin. Those just starting out will find salaries more around the $45,000 range. And this is dependent on education and specialization of the job seeker. Those that hold doctorates will find the most work. The Psychology Examining Board within the state’s Department of Regulation and Licensing provides oversight and licensing for psychologists. Those that gain licensing find work in public and private clinics, along with social work and private industry jobs. For the research inclined, most work is found in universities and private industries.

Those with master’s degrees will not find a large amount of jobs. Since a doctorate is required to become licensed, a master’s holder will be limited to research and analysis or providing counseling with a licensed psychologist supervising. Having a bachelor’s degree means an even shallower job pool. Limited numbers of research jobs are available. Working as a psychology teacher in high school is another option.

Most jobs will be found in metropolitan areas like Madison or Milwaukee. University towns such as Stevens Point or River Falls may give research opportunities not available in other parts of the state. All of these are within a short drive to the many outdoor activities available in Wisconsin.
