Oklahoma may be a surprising option for those looking at where to get their degrees and set up practice as a psychologist. This state is just north of Texas in the heart of the Great Plains belt. Seven Fortune 1000 companies make their home within the state. The state ranks fifth in overall GDP growth. The economy heavily relies on agriculture, but does a surprising amount of manufacturing and business as well. The state is the second largest producer of natural gas and fifth largest in crude oil production. In the area of manufacturing, aerospace is a huge contributor to the economy. Due to its location in the center of the country, Oklahoma companies are also major transportation and logistics providers.
The major universities and colleges of the state are generally located within easy reach of the largest towns. There are quite a few that offer psychology degrees. The biggest urban centers are around Tulsa and Oklahoma City. Almost 60% of the state’s total population calls these areas home. The state has seen a steady rate of population increase in the past few decades. Outside of the state’s major urban centers, most of the population is found in small towns and rural communities. The state generally has a lower cost of living than many other areas of the country. Housing costs are below national averages as well. This can be an attractive package for those looking for a slower pace of life with good job opportunities.

Salaries for private sector jobs will outstrip those in the public sector. Schools and mental health clinics show a growing need for psychological services. Substance abuse centers and social services will remain constant employment sources as well. Many choose to go into private practice and that will be more successful in the urban centers.
Oklahoma is a moderately populated state with some urban areas with denser populations. Most opportunities within the state will require an applicant to hold a PhD. Accreditation and specialization are also factors in what opportunities are available. Oklahoma requires licensing for practicing psychologists. The Oklahoma State Board of Examiners of Psychologists is responsible for regulating psychologists. Options for those with lesser academic degrees are much more limited.
