The hub of life in Minnesota has to be the twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. This urban center is home to almost sixty percent of the state’s population. Minnesota Psychology Job Outlook and Salary
Minnesota is a moderately populated state with one major urban area and many smaller cities around the state. Most opportunities in all areas of the state will require an applicant to hold a PhD. They will find work in areas such as public health services, university research or private practice. Minnesota does require licensure for psychologists. The Minnesota Board of Psychology is responsible for regulating those practicing psychology within the state limits. For those that hold master’s or bachelor’s degrees, the options are more limited. Research and analysis jobs may be found at some public agencies or universities.
For those living in the Twin Cities metropolitan area, the prospective jobs will have higher salaries than those in the smaller cities and towns. Public sector jobs will, on average, lag behind private sector ones. Schools and mental health clinics will have a growing need for psychologists in the foreseeable future. Substance abuse clinics and social services will also be strong employers. Private practice is an option that many will choose. Industry will have openings, but these will have heavy competition levels.
Minnesota is slated to have demand grow on par with the national average over the next few years. By 2014, it is projected that the state will see a 16% demand growth according to Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. According to Payscale, a clinical psychologist in Minnesota will average $64,000 per year after practicing 2-3 years. Those beginning practice will start around $45,000 - $48,000.
