Guide to Maryland Psychology Degree Programs

Are you looking for a vibrant state with history but yet progressive at the same time? Maryland, oh Maryland, may be the answer for you. This state is nestled between Pennsylvania and Virginia. The largest urban centers are the suburbs of Washington DC and the state capital of Baltimore. In between a large suburban corridor has grown up over the past few decades. People often live and work miles apart. But others can find work close by. There are smaller cities outside of this massive urban sprawl. This economic concentration makes great opportunities for psychologists to find work.

Education wise Maryland is extremely rich. It is home to many colleges and universities that are nationally and internationally renowned. For those looking for a world class education, the pickings are thick and abundant. Residency opportunities are just about as abundant. Living in Maryland depends completely on location. The far western counties are sparsely populated while the inner urban areas of Baltimore are very dense. And in between ranges suburban and rural sprawl in many directions. Maryland is home to many manufacturing companies and this just adds to the economic diversity and richness. Psychologists can take advantage of this richness in both education and work opportunities.

Those positions located in metropolitan areas are expected to be higher than those in rural communities. Private industry averages higher paying positions than the public sector. Private practice wages can vary from practice to practice.

According to the Maryland Career and Workforce Information office, growth in psychology positions is supposed to be higher that of the national average. The state’s demand for psychologists is expected to grow 25% in the next decade. This is especially true in the urban areas from Baltimore to the outskirts of Washington DC. Rural areas are gradually becoming bedroom communities for many of the urban areas. This will drive up the need for psychologists in these areas as well.

In an area sustained by two major metropolitan areas covering much of the state, Maryland’s job pool is actually very healthy. Most psychology jobs will be available to those with PhD’s. With this degree, all positions for counseling and research are available.  Maryland does require licensing for psychologists practicing within the state. The Maryland Board of Examiners of Psychologists takes responsibility for examining and regulating psychologists. As with other states, opportunities for those with master’s and bachelor’s degrees are limited. Many find jobs doing research and analysis for universities or government offices.
