If you love the high country but want an urban option as well, the state of Colorado may be the right place. Two thirds of the state’s population can be found in the urban area around the state capital of Denver. Called the Mile High city for a reason, Denver offers true urban living in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Located on a plateau the city is the major financial center of the state. The rest of the state is dominated by agriculture, mining and tourism. Several large military bases contribute billions each year to the state’s economy.
Colorado offers quality educational options for those seeking a psychology degree. They have both public and private college options. Most opportunities for jobs will be found in the Denver metropolitan area, but many smaller cities provide options as well. The state has had double digit growth for the past few decades and this continues. The population of the state is very diverse and Denver is an even larger mix. The large growth scale and diverse population provide opportunities for psychology majors.
Colorado Psychology Job Outlook and Salary
Colorado is a moderately populated state with one large urban area, several smaller ones and large areas of sparsely populated counties. Most opportunities in the state will require an applicant to have a PhD. They will find work in sectors ranging from public health services to university research. Colorado does require licensing for those practicing psychology inside the state. The Colorado Board of Psychologist Examiners is responsible for regulating psychologists. Options for those with lesser academic degrees are limited. Those with master’s degrees might find jobs doing limited counseling under the direct supervision of a licensed psychologist. Research and analysis jobs can be found at both degree levels.
Private industry positions will be available, but limited in comparison to others. Private sector jobs will have higher salary ranges than most public ones, as in most states. For those living in metropolitan areas, the prospective jobs will have higher salaries than those in small cities and rural communities. Schools and mental health clinics will continue to have a growing need for psychological services. Substance abuse centers as well as social services will continue to be hotbeds for development. Private practice is also an option for many.
Over the next few years, Colorado is forecast to have demand grow at well above the national average. By 2014, it is projected that the state will see a 23% demand growth according to Colorado Department of Labor and Employment. According to Payscale, a clinical psychologist in Colorado after a couple of years practice will average $64,700 annually. Those just getting started will make around $48,000 - $52,000 per year.
