California has long been a gathering spot for those that wish to gain a psychology degree and begin practicing. With several large urban areas and many smaller ones, the state offers many options for those wanting to go to school. There are dozens of universities available all around the state which offers psychology degrees at various levels. Many of them are nationally recognized. For many, the state is a combination of outdoor activities and big city living. Most people can find a place inside this state to meet their needs and wants at the same time.
From the beauty around Tahoe to the Golden Gate Bridge, tourism is a constant economic flow. But that is only a small part of this economic giant. It ranks ninth in the world as an economic power by itself. Its position on the Pacific Coast makes this state a magnet for Asian trading opportunities. The north part of the state boasts Silicon Valley and many high tech companies go their starts there. This is also a huge agricultural producer as well. The mild winters make food production a year round prospect in many areas. Entertainment and business dominate the Los Angeles area. Financial services and other business services are also important in this economy.
California Psychology Job Outlook and Salary
By 2014, it is projected that California will see a 20% demand growth according to the state’s Employment Development Department. This places them at slightly above the national average of 16%. A clinical psychologist practicing in California can expect to average $68,500 annually after 2-4 years according to Payscale. Those beginning practice will start around $52,000 - $54,000.
California has the highest population level of all fifty states. This provides a wide diversity of options for psychology degree holders. Most opportunities will require a PhD. Those successful in obtaining jobs can find work in diverse areas such as public health services, university research or private practice. The California Board of Psychology is responsible for examining and regulating psychologists within the state. Options for those with lesser academic degrees are limited when compared to those with PhD’s. Those with master’s degrees may be able to do limited counseling under the direct guidance of a licensed psychologist. Research and analysis jobs can be found at both bachelor’s and master’s levels.
Jobs will command higher salaries in urban centers as opposed to the smaller cities and rural communities. Public sector salaries will lag behind private sector ones. Growth in both arenas is going to be about the same over the next few years. Schools and mental health clinics will continue to have a growing need for psychological services. Social Services, substance abuse centers, and private practice will continue to grow as well. Industry will continue to have demand for services as well.
