Substance Abuse & Addiction Counseling Degrees
A substance abuse and addiction counseling degree is required for anyone who is interested in working as an addiction counselor. This is a highly professional industry and education and licensing is a must for psychologists and counselors. These professionals work in mental health facilities, rehabilitation centers, hospitals, and in private practice around the world. The duties of a substance abuse and addiction counseling professional generally revolve around working with patients to discuss addiction, healing, and to manage and develop a future plan for the addiction that the patient faces. The capacity in which these professionals work is different depending on their exact position, but the duties are generally the same across the board. There are state mandates that require licensing once the education is completed by these individuals. Every state has different specific licensing requirements, but the degree is usually the stepping stone to licensure within the field of substance abuse and addiction counseling. Professionals in this field can expect to earn an average annual salary of $40,500 depending on their exact education and experience on the job. Those who have higher degrees or who work in private practice can earn much more than those with less education or a position within a facility. The future outlook for substance abuse counselors is positive, with above average growth expected into the next decade. The professionals who have more job training or education in their repertoire will easily find the highest paid positions and the best opportunities within this career field.
