Marriage Therapy & Counseling Degrees

A master’s degree in counseling is a minimum requirement for individuals who want to become involved in marriage therapy and counseling. In addition, many states require professionals to have 2,000 to 3,000 hours of training experience that is supervised. Marriage therapy professionals can work in mental health facilities, clinics, hospitals, social services, and in their own private practice. Their duties will include providing therapy for couples who are trying to resolve emotional issues, as well as helping to improve communication and educate the public on proper behavior and the psychology of marriage. Counselors who choose to go into private practice will have a variety of duties and work to choose from, while those who work in a facility might have a more specific job title that restricts what they do or turns them into a general counseling professional. State requirements usually mandate testing and licensure for marriage therapy and counseling, but each state’s requirements will be much different. The professionals who work in marriage counseling positions can expect to earn about $45,000 annually, on average. Different states and positions will garner much different wages, as will those people who have higher degrees or more experience in the field. The marriage counseling industry is expected to see growth that is slightly above average through the next 10 years, although that exact rate of growth will vary from one location to the next. Finding the best positions and the highest paying careers will require a top-rate education and the most relevant degree and training.
